Anthropic is probing claims that unauthorized users have accessed the AI company’s powerful Mythos tool. This is the same tool that earlier this month freaked out banking authorities, government officials, and cybersecurity experts with its capabilities.
The model is supposedly so good at finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities that Anthropic has been scared to release it to wider use. Its preview version is currently restricted to vetted partners like Nvidia and JPMorgan, with only a select group of employees allowed access to prevent exploitation.
The incident stokes fears that a tool designed to expose weaknesses could slip outside controlled hands and wreak havoc on the entire digital economy.
Mythos has already identified thousands of high‑severity flaws, including bugs in every major OS and browser, some gone unnoticed for two decades.
Testers say it can autonomously plan multi‑step attacks and even managed to escape its sandbox during testing, when prompted, and connect to the internet.
Its capabilities have rattled cybersecurity and software stocks. Regulators warn Mythos accelerates the shift from human‑paced cyber defense to AI‑paced one.
Finance ministers, central bankers, and other regulators from Washington to London say Mythos could undermine global financial stability by revealing weaknesses faster than institutions can patch them.
The US Treasury and Federal Reserve summoned bank chiefs; the UK financial regulators are running urgent reviews; Canada and the EU are assessing exposure.
Officials warn Mythos lowers the barrier for attacks on interconnected banking, payments, and market‑infrastructure systems. Healthcare systems and energy infrastructure could also be vulnerable.
Cybersecurity experts treat Mythos as “a really good hacker,” but its biggest threat is to poorly defended systems. The UK AI Safety Institute found no evidence that it can reliably breach well‑protected infrastructure.
Some analysts argue Anthropic benefits from emphasizing unprecedented capabilities, especially as the firm reportedly prepares to list on a stock exchange as early as this year.
But others say the leap is real and future models will widen the gap. Cyber officials stress the basics: patching, updating and securing legacy IT should still block most attacks.
Anthropic is reportedly preparing to participate in one of the largest IPO waves in history. Rival OpenAI and space technology giant SpaceX are also gearing up to list in 2026.
This trio alone could add more than $3 trillion to public markets despite all three being unprofitable. Anthropic’s last funding round valued it at $380 billion. Latest reports put its valuations somewhere around $800 billion.
Mythos has now become both its calling card and its biggest risk factor.
