What Is It?
On prediction market platforms, people can trade contracts based on the outcome of future events, from central bank rate decisions to sports and weather. Each contract pays out if the participant correctly predicts the outcome.
- Who will win the next election?
- Which company is the most valuable by the end of the month?
- Will Brent crude oil hit $150 per barrel?
In the US, prediction contracts are treated as derivatives and regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. But often they're treated as a form of gambling. Many countries, including France, China, and Australia, have banned them.
