SK Hynix Taps Into AI Boom

South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix raised $29.4 billion in a secondary listing on New York’s Nasdaq, with shares ending the day 13% higher than the issue price of $149 per share. This isn’t a fresh IPO (initial public offering). SK Hynix has already been trading in Seoul since 1996 and is South Korea’s second-most valuable company after Samsung.

The US debut is one of the largest listings ever done, second only to SpaceX’s $85.7 billion IPO earlier in June.

The company issued about 18 million new shares, roughly 2.5% of its stock. This was a quick way to raise cash, taking advantage of the searing-hot AI boom and deeper American capital markets. It intends to use the proceeds to build more production capacity.

Memory Chips Supercycle

SK Hynix may not be a household name, but it’s right at the center of the AI supply chain and a crucial part of Nvidia’s success as a chipmaker. Nvidia does not make memory, so it relies on companies like SK Hynix.

  • SK Hynix controls roughly 60% of the market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM)
  • HBM is essential for AI models like Claude and ChatGPT
  • Strong demand has caused a memory shortage and forced companies like Apple, Nintendo, and Sony to increase the prices of their products

This has all been a massive windfall for SK Hynix and other memory makers. Its shares in Seoul have skyrocketed nearly 240% this year, even after accounting for a recent slump. It is valued just above one trillion dollars.

What Are ADRs?

When a foreign company wants to do a secondary listing on an American stock exchange, it often chooses to use American depositary receipts (ADRs). In SK Hynix’s case, 10 ADRs equal one Korean share.

  • A custodian bank in Korea holds the actual shares
  • A US depositary bank issues ADRs that represent them
  • Those ADRs trade on the Nasdaq in dollars, like any US stock

Technically, you don’t own the shares. You own a beneficial interest. But in practice, you get almost the same deal with dividends, liquidity, and voting rights (ADR holders can instruct their bank to vote on their behalf).

2026 Is a Mega-Listing Year

SK Hynix and SpaceX are part of a blockbuster year for equity fundraising. According to Goldman Sachs, 2026 is already tied with 2021 as the record IPO year in dollar terms, and this is before some of the big AI stock debuts. Established public companies are also tapping the markets, issuing new shares.

  • Alphabet is raising $80B from stock sales
  • AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI have both filed for IPOs, likely seeking +1 trillion valuations.

SK Hynix’s successful US debut may boost the confidence of Anthropic and OpenAI. The timing of these listings is still open. There’s been a pullback in recent weeks from AI stocks, raising fears that the market may have overheated.
